Tesla to roll back feature allowing passengers and drivers play video games while the car is in motion
The announcement from Tesla to let drivers and passengers play video games while the vehicle is in motion received a fair amount of criticism from its own customers and safety experts. It even led to the opening of the investigation of the game feature, also known as Passenger Play from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The investigation covers around 580,000 vehicles across Model S, Model X and Model 3 manufactured between 2017 and 2022.
The EV maker, amid growing backlash for the new update, has agreed to roll back the feature. The new software update will let drivers and passengers play video games when the car is parked.
Tesla is credited to pioneer the over-the-air software updates in auto industry. The similar software update pushed in last summer, according to the New York Times report, enabled driver and passenger play video games while the car is in motion. Tesla drivers and passengers are able to play games such as Solitaire, Sky Force Reloaded, and The Battle of Polytopia while driving.
Tesla is also being investigated for its troubled Autopilot feature, which is heavily promoted by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. Many believes that the Tesla’s Autopilot feature, also known as Full-Self Driving, lacks sophisticated technologies, but used by its other rivals, to make the feature more safe. The company has refrained from using technology to track whether drivers are giving continuous attention to road while using Autopilot feature.
